August Newsletter

6th November 2016

Dear Foodbank supporter,

We hope you are having an enjoyable August and are as inspired as we are watching team GB excel in Rio. If we could give all our volunteers and supporters Olympic medals for their contributions, we certainly would! This month we have seen no respite in Foodbank numbers, with consistently busy sessions as some families struggle during the school holidays. Many have found our school uniform provision a blessing.

Thanks as always for your support, and enjoy the remainder of the summer.
Elizabeth and Jon (Project Lead & Branch manager)

Eat Well Funding Needed

We have now successfully run two Eat Well Spend Less courses., encouraging people to produce healthy meals on a budget. These have been funded though the Lambeth Food Partnership. The last course saw an eager bunch of young people preparing a range of healthy dishes including meat and lentil burgers and a fruit based dessert. Two more courses are due to start in the Gypsy Hill Area in September.

These courses are proving really popular and we have further demand in Brixton and Streatham. A five week course costs around £800 to deliver, providing essential cooking skills to improve diets. food to take home and and resources to help maintain skills learnt. Streatham Update

The Wednesday evening sessions have now been running for six weeks and it is encouraging that clients from the local community have begun to find us. Our new venue offers clients an additional opportunity to redeem their voucher and also to receive advice from the Centre 70 team. Opening times are from 7-8.30pm at St Margaret’s Church on Barcombe Avenue. Refreshments and a listening ear are also part of the service. Streatham is also open for donations from 9-11 on Saturdays.

Les’ Story

Les is a familiar face for those at the Norwood branch. He likes to hang out and chat to clients, to keep himself busy, and to show his gratitude for the help he received. Les suffered when living in Australia, due to a stroke that left him disabled, and then following a divorce, was shipped back to the UK on visa grounds, despite having built a life there for over twenty years. Separated from his family and alone, his situation was compounded by six months of benefit mix ups. His first payment was actually this week! “If it wasn’t for foodbank I would be in the gutter starving” said Les.
