Harvest is traditionally a time to gather crops and store provisions to last throughout the barren winter months. This is also true for our Foodbank as we seek to increase our stock levels before the busy winter period kicks in. Read about our ‘Combined Harvest Appeal’ on our website and the vital ways in which you can help.

This October we will be running another Eat Well Spend Less course, this time in Brixton. Eat Well Spend Less is a free course over six-sessions, teaching people cookery skills and household budgeting tips to help make tight budgets stretch further. If you have some cooking experience and would like to help click here to volunteer. Courses run during the day with the first course starting on Wednesday, 4th October.

See above shopping list for items we are short of this month. For drop-off locations, click here.

We are grateful for every food donation, no matter how big or small. Yet we want to acknowledge some of the individuals or organisations that give exceptional amounts each month. One of our biggest donations in August was from Holy Trinity Church which collected in excess of 100 kg of food. Thank you!

We’re hugely grateful to the London Community Foundation for their recent grant which will enable us to continue to provide advice services to clients at Foodbank. The approval from the Red Nose Day – Evening Standard Dispossessed Fund ensures that an advice worker from either the Brixton Advice Centre or Centre 70 will be present to engage with troubling questions around housing, benefits and debt.

We’ve been keeping tabs on our latest Foodbank figures over the summer, having witnessed some extraordinarily busy sessions. It didn’t come as a surprise to learn that during the period of July and August we had seen an increase of 500 people using our Foodbank compared to the same period last year. We are more grateful than ever for the generous donations we continue to receive.

Get ready with your shopping lists – we have two important supermarket collections coming up! From Thursday, 30th November until Saturday, 2nd December we’ll be running our annual Tesco supermarket collection. We are also hoping to arrange an additional collection with Sainsbury’s on a Saturday in October. If you can take time through your corporate responsibility scheme at work, have flexible working hours or are free on a Saturday, then put these dates in your diary now. To register an interest email [email protected].
