October Newsletter

25th November 2018

We are so grateful to all the schools, churches and individuals that organised collections for us over the harvest period. We were deeply touched by the generosity shown with large quantities of supplies regularly weighed in throughout the month by our warehouse team. One school even celebrated harvest by going back in time as pupils and staff dressed up in period costume and donated tinned food frequently eaten in the early 20th century. With 737 people receiving Foodbank parcels in September, our harvest donations are a lifeline for many.

You can now sign up for our winter supermarket collection which takes place on Thursday, 29th and Friday, 30th November as well as Saturday, 1st December. We will be based at Tesco stores in Streatham and Brixton. Volunteer roles include handing out shopping lists to customers, sorting and stacking food donations and transporting the food to our warehouse. This might be a great time to use corporate volunteering hours if offered by your employer. Please sign up by clicking on the relevant button below.

We are hugely grateful to the City of London’s City Bridge Trust for providing a substantial grant that will enable the Brixton Advice Centre and Centre 70 to provide advice to Foodbank clients for the next three years. Advice workers will continue to be based at our Norwood, Brixton and Streatham branches and will liaise with clients during Foodbank sessions to provide expert guidance, especially in the areas of housing, benefits and debt.

Food donations are the bread and butter (pardon the pun) for our Foodbank, but monetary donations also have a huge part to play. Financial donations enable us to purchase specific food types when we run low, and contribute to the running costs we incur. There are a number of ways you can give ranging from one-off gifts to regular donations. Please click on the image above for more details or on the button below to make a contribution.

Make a Donation

We are requesting donations of reusable canvas bags to help us pack our clients’ food parcels. Not only are these stronger than the plastic bags but they are also environmentally friendly and can be returned by our clients should they need to use our service again in the future.
We are short of these foods in October. If you could purchase any of the above mentioned items, we would be very grateful.
A heartfelt thanks to the Siobhan Dowd Trust for an amazing delivery of wonderful books which we have added to the Bookbank at our Norwood branch. It’s lovely to be able to give children a special book to take home when they leave the Foodbank with their parents. If you have children’s books you would like to donate please ensure they are in excellent condition and are suitable for children of secondary school age. Books can only be donated at our Norwood or Streatham branches.
‘Clothe Me – Thank You’ is a charity that operates much like a Foodbank. Those that are vulnerable receive a voucher that can be exchanged for clothes at participating charity shops in the area. The Geranium charity shops in Tulse Hill and West Norwood are known to support this scheme. In partnership with ‘Clothe Me – Thank You’ we are now able to issue these vouchers  at our distribution centres which will be especially useful for clients as winter approaches
