NEWS AND UPDATES

Lambeth Foodbanks opened two Hubs this month, welcoming guests for the first time in over 18 months! Waterloo Foodbank opened their doors at St George Martyr on Borough High Street and the Norwood & Brixton Foodbank opened at Emmanuel Church on Clive Road, SE21 8BU. Here is what one volunteers had to say: “It was strange to open the Hub, familiar yet new to us. We have been quiet, but know that the people who have attended already appreciate us being available in person”.

The Emmanuel Church Hub offers food parcels, refreshments, a specialist advice service and volunteers to lend a listening ear. Opening hours are from 11am-2pm every Thursday.

We have now updated our giving options on our website, adding Just Giving as our chosen giving platform to replace Virgin Money Giving which is due to close at the end of November. If you are making regular payments with Virgin Money, it’s really easy to make the switch. Just cancel your existing Direct Debit and set up a new one with Just Giving here. Like all giving platforms, there is a small charge for any transaction, so if you would like to make your money go further we would encourage you to make monthly contributions directly to our bank account by using the below bank details. Please do also return a gift aid form so we can make your donation go further.

After the success of last year’s Christmas Star campaign, we’re hoping to do more of the same this year. We are looking for the creative among you to help us make handmade Christmas tree decorations in the theme of a star. The stars can be crocheted, knitted, sewn, or made from wood, wire, paper or any other material your imagination can conceive. All we ask is that they are safe (no spikey bits please), of good quality (this probably isn’t a craft for the kids) and not too large to fit on a tree. Our aim is to have enough stars to place one in every Christmas parcel we deliver. Homemade stars must be with us by Friday, 10th December at the latest but preferably by the end of November. Please email Amanda at [email protected]  before delivering to let us know they are on their way.
Can you spare 2 hours to help us in November as we continue our close relationship with local Tesco stores to collect food for people in crisis? On Thursday, 18th November, Friday, 19th November and Saturday, 20th November we will be holding food collections at Tesco stores in Streatham and Brixton. Each volunteering slot is just two hours and involves engaging with customers and sorting and packing food. For more information and details of how to sign up please visit our website.
Between 20th-23rd December, we except to deliver over 750 Christmas food parcels across Lambeth. The parcels will contain the standard food bank items, a box (or more) of festive Christmas food, fresh items (fruit, veg, bread, eggs), a Christmas star and hopefully a gift for each adult and child. We have created an Amazon wish list of items we think would make great gifts for our clients. If you would like to purchase any of these items and deliver them to our warehouse in November, we would be very grateful. Donations of new hot water bottles and small blankets are also appreciated. Thank you.

Delivery Driver
Do you own a car and have some spare hours each month that you could use to to deliver food parcels? We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our team to deliver parcels from our warehouse in Streatham on Mondays from 11.30am-3pm. Click here for more information and to apply.

We’re increasingly concerned for the plight of many of our Foodbank clients this winter as the impact of Universal Credit cuts start to kick in. Foodbank Trustee Alison Williams explains more about the challenges our clients will face in the months ahead in this article for the South London Press.
A big thank you to the Herne Hill Music Festival and Opal Flutes who raised an incredible £350 for our work through their coffee morning concert. Thanks also to local MP Helen Hayes who represented us so well by passionately talking about the work that we do.
We wanted to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the schools, churches and community organisations that have donated food or money to us this harvest time – your generosity has been outstanding! Pictured above are children from St Joseph’s School presenting us with a cheque, but food and financial donations have come from far and wide and we’re grateful for them all. We also want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who donated to our Harvest Appeal. We have raised just over £600 so far which is amazing! It’s not too late to make a contribution, simply text ‘Harvest’ followed by the amount (up to £20) to 70580. The cost will be the charge of a local call plus the donation with the option to add gift aid. Thank you for your support.
Please click on the image above to see our most up to date shopping list. We are very short on non-pork meat, tinned soup, tinned tomatoes, whole UHT milk, small jars of instant coffee and hot chocolate. If you can donate, here’s where to go or alternatively you can donate using the Bankuet delivery service.

REGULAR ITEMS

Please note that due to Covid-19, some of our distribution points are currently closed. Drop-boxes are still operating in various local shops across Lambeth.

Please check our website for the latest information on how and where to donate food.

We have a number of options to suit your donating preferences, including our text to donate service where simply by texting ‘dinner 5’, ‘dinner 10’ or ‘dinner XX’ (insert amount of your choice) to 70085 enables you to donate the corresponding amount through your phone. Please click on the image above and download our ‘ways to donate’ info sheet to see all options available to you.
