NEWS AND UPDATES

You may already be aware that Virgin Money Giving, our chosen giving platform, is to close on 30th November. We are grateful to the many supporters who make regular donations through this site which are vital to the running of our charity and enable us to provide the service that we do. We will shortly be making the switch to Just Giving and will be contacting all our donors by email to ensure the transition is as smooth as possible. We will also have a further update in next month’s newsletter. For those more comfortable making monthly contributions directly to our bank account, you can bypass any giving platform by using the below bank details. Please do also return a gift aid form so we can make your donation go further.

The Norwood and Brixton Foodbank, in partnership with Lambeth Foodbanks, plans to open its first Foodbank hub on Thursday, 21st October at Emmanuel Church, Clive Road, SE21 8BU from 11am-2pm. Hubs are set to replace our pre-pandemic distribution point model, with less emphasis on preparing/storing food on site and more focus on providing additional client support. A delivery service will remain in place for the majority of clients. Our hope is that hubs will provide an opportunity for those in the area to come and receive  benefit advice, money management tips and a range of other signposting information. Advice workers from Centre 70 and the Brixton Advice Centre will be available to provide specialist advice and volunteers will be on hand for those who just want refreshments and a chat. Other hubs from the Lambeth Foodbank Partnership will also be open on Wednesdays from 11am-1pm at Hope Church, 105 Tyers Street, Vauxhall and on Thursdays from 1.30-2.30pm, St George the Martyr, Borough High Street.

Can you help us with our harvest appeal? With the £20/week cut to Universal Credit starting today, the impact could be devastating and we’re expecting a big spike in demand. We’re looking to raise £1,000 to help boost our depleted stock levels in time for the winter months ahead. Simply text ‘Harvest’ followed by the amount (up to £20) to 70580. The cost will be the charge of a local call plus the donation with the option to  add gift aid. Thank you for your support.

Please click on the image above to see our most up to date shopping list. We are very short on non-pork meat, tinned soup, tinned tomatoes, toilet roll, washing up liquid and laundry pods. If you can donate, here’s where to go or alternatively you can donate using the Bankuet delivery service.
We want to thank Dulwich Quilters and the quilters at Bell House (also Dulwich) for knitting and sewing these stunning, ornately crafted hot water bottle covers. Thanks also to the generous supporter who donated over 150 hot water bottles. Each bottle now has a beautifully hand crafted cover to accompany it. Although we have room for more hot water bottle donations, we have now turned our attention to small, lightweight fleece blankets (must be new) to help those struggling with the cold. if you can help please contact [email protected] before making any delivery. Thank you.
We work closely with many charities and referral partners, sign-posting our clients for further help. One of our partners, Christians Against Poverty, are running their next Job Club in November. These clubs have been a great opportunity for clients to improve their interview techniques and CV’s through the training provided and also increase their confidence through 1:1 coaching sessions. Several Foodbank clients have found work by attending a Job Club. The next club will commence on Thursday, 4th November at 10am at St Paul’s Church, Herne Hill, SE24 9LY and will run for 5 weeks. If you know anyone who would like to attend please email [email protected] to confirm a place.
A belated thank you to parents and staff of Hornsby House School in Balham who wanted to help the local community while stuck at home during lockdown. They collated over 50 of their favourite recipes into a fun, colourful cookbook and thanks to a very enthusiastic response from the school community (who were all keen to have new recipes to try out after months of cooking) raised £1,000 for Wandsworth and Lambeth Foodbanks!

Do you own a car, have a clean driving licence and are fully insured? Do you have some spare hours each month that you could use to to deliver food parcels? We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our team to deliver parcels from our warehouse in Streatham on Mondays from 11.30am-3pm. Click on the VOLUNTEER button below to apply.
