Figures released by the Trussell Trust last week indicated 1,583,668 emergency parcels were  given out between 1st April 2018 and 31st March 2019, a startling 18.8% increase. More than a third of these parcels – 577,618 – went to children. Nationally, supplies distributed by Foodbanks have risen by 73.4% in the five years since April 2014. Last week also saw the release of our own local figures. A small increase meant the Norwood and Brixton Foodbank provided a record 9,929 three-day emergency food parcels to local people between April 2018 to March 2019. Of this number, 3,863 went to children. Food donations from the community totalled 79 tonnes. Benefit delays were once again a major contributory factor leading to Foodbank use. Last month we received the wonderful news that we obtained a grant of £100,000 which will support the redevelopment of our warehouse at St Margaret’s church in Streatham, transforming it into a South London warehouse in partnership with other Trussell Trust Foodbank’s in the area. Working together will help us manage and distribute stock more efficiently, placing us in the best possible position to tackle the continued increase in demand.
We are very grateful to Mike and the Brixton Buzz team for organising a recent David Bowie tribute night at the Dog Star in Brixton. Hundreds of Bowie fans danced the night away to celebrate the anniversary of the singer’s death with over £1500 raised for local charities including our own Foodbank.
In amongst the dinosaurs in Crystal Palace park Browne and Green are opening a new cafe and we are delighted to announce that we will also have a drop box there! Next time you are in Crystal Palace park, don’t just think ‘D for dinosaurs’ – think ‘D for drop box’ too!
In addition to Crystal Palace park, we’ve added several new drop points to make it even easier for you to drop food. The new locations include The Old Dairy Health Centre on Croxstead Road (during opening hours), The Rosendale Pub on Rosendale Road, and the Sainsbury’s local stores situated at the top of Brixton Hill, Herne Hill and in West Norwood. These locations will be added to our current list of drop boxes on our website soon.
Nominations are now open for the movement for good awards. We have until Friday, 17th May to gather as many nominations as possible to put ourselves in contention for the £1000 awards. On Saturday, 18th May we will be running a Foodbank cake stall at the Rosendale Spring Fair. We are on the lookout for bakers to provide us with tasty treats and also for people to help us sell them on the day. If you are able to participate please do email us at [email protected].
